IDENTIFYING THE WALL LOGS:
- HALF LOG STARTER COURSE: The top 1/2 is used to start the log wall. It is the first wall log that you will set on your sub floor. The bottom half is the finish course. It is not always used. You may place it on the top of the wall to set stick framed trusses on. It can also be rotated to match the slope of the pitch of the roof.
- WHOLE LOG STARTER: This is the start course that runs at a 90 degree angle to the half log starter course. Whole log starters come with a saddle notched corner to cap over the half log starter. Some customers will not use a whole log starter. Instead they will use regular Swedish cope wall logs as the starter course. Either way works, but the whole log starter course has a larger surface area to rest on the
sub floor.
- STRAIGHT WALL LOG: A straight wall log is a Swedish cope log that does not have a saddle notch.
- SINGLE-NOTCHED WALL LOG: These are the logs that go in the corners of your walls. A regular bundle of notched logs will have a mixture of single notched logs and also double notched logs.
- DOUBLE-NOTCHED WALL LOG: These are the logs that go in the corners of your walls. A double-notched wall log has 1 notch in both ends of the log. These logs are to be cut into 2 pieces at the job site and used as 2 shorter pieces. It is necessary to start some of the corner notches with shorter logs in order to off set the joints in the wall. You will want to avoid starting a corner with similar length logs to avoid
having joints close to each other in the wall. A random length bundle of notched logs will have a mixture of single-notched logs and double-notched logs.
- CAP AND SADDLE WALL LOG NOTCHES: Frequently used when the log package has a log 2nd floor system. These are used to set round log floor joists into a log wall without notching the log floor joist. Some applications cannot use cap and saddle notches because the height of the log floor joists will not be adjustable. A cap and saddle is spaced between 2 wall logs and that height may not be the desired height.
