Log Home / Cabin Construction Guide
BASEMENT/CRAWL SPACE PREPARATION:
If you are building on a basement or crawl space you will need to install any necessary framing below your sub floor.
- PRESSURE TREATED LUMBER: This is used as the base at the bottom of your frame walls. This lumber has been specially treated and is designed to sit directly on concrete. You will want to avoid installing non-treated lumber or logs directly on concrete in order to prevent decay. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- ANCHOR BOLTS: The contractor who installs your foundation typically supplies these anchor bolts and nuts along with installing them when they pour the concrete. Most often these are 5/8" diameters. If you are purchasing the Dry-In Package and this is not going to be 5/8"; let us know so the correct size nuts and washers are shipped.
- BEARING PLATE WASHERS: The are square washers that are used in conjunction with your anchor bolts instead of round washers. Most countries require this type of washer instead of round washers when bolting bearing walls to your foundation. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- 2x FRAMING for pony walls, partition walls and bearing walls in a basement application. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- SILL SEAL: This is a foam strip that is used as a gasket between the foundation and the pressure treated plate. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- PRESSURE TREAT: This is the plate that sits on the top of the sill seal and the foundation. The I-Joist subfloor will rest on top of this. This lumber has been specially treated and is designed to sit directly on concrete. You will want to avoid installing lumber or logs directly on concrete in order to prevent decay in the untreated wood. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- ANCHOR BOLT: This will be used to bolt the pressure treated plate to the foundation. There needs to be enough bolt left above the pressure treated plate to attach a bearing plate washer, nut and then an extension coupler. The anchor bold needs to be installed to line up with the center of the first course of starter logs. The contractor who installs your foundation typically supplies these anchor bolts and nuts
along with installing them when they pour the concrete. Most often these are 5/8" diameter. If this is not going to be 5/8", let us know so we can ship the correct size of coupler and allthread.
- BEARING PLATE WASHERS: These are square washers that are used in conjunction with your anchor bolts instead of round washers. Most countries require this type of washer instead of round washers when bolting bearing walls to your foundation. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- NUT: This is a 5/8" nut that is to be installed below the coupler to bolt down the bearing plate washer. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- COUPLER: This is 5/8" long nut that is female on both ends to be able to extend a threaded rod from anchor bolt through the subfloor and first course of starter log. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- ALLTHREAD: This is a 5/8" threaded rod that is used to extend from the anchor bolt in the foundation through the starter course of log. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- DOUBLE RIM BOARD: This is typically a 1 1/8" thick rim board to be used as the perimeter around your entire sub floor. This sits on top of the pressure treated plate. Because log walls are heavier than stick framed walls it is best to sue 2 layers of this rim board. The 2nd layer is sometimes used as the blocking for the perimeter I-Joists. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- I-JOIST: This is engineered lumber that is in the shape of the letter "I". These are the majority of the frame for your subfloor. These are commonly 11 7/8" tall. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- BLOCKING: This is used to block and brace the I-Joists any time the I-Joist rests on a bearing wall. One of the main purposes of blocking is to keep the I-Joists from rolling or tipping over when a heavy load is set on tope of them. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- SUB FLOOR ADHESIVE: This is to be applied to the tops of the I-Joists just before placing the 3/4" OSB on the I-Joist. It is also good to use this in any joist hangers before setting the I-Joist in the hanger. Sub floor adhesive acts as a glue, and also helps to reduce squeaking floors. Some customers will use this item between the log starter course and the subfloor as well. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- 3/4" T&G OSB: This is the actual sub floor material that finished flooring is installed on. These come in 4'x8' sheets and include a tongue and groove connection to fit the pieces into each other. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- T-111: This is a thin sheet of plywood with a decorate rough sawn finish on the exposed side. This is used to hide the exposed pressure treated plate and versa-rim sub floor. These come in 4'x8' sheets and will need to be cut into thinner 8' lengths on site. This is typically stained at the same time as the logs. **This is a "Dry-In Package" item**
- DRIP LEDGE: This is a colored piece of metal that is meant to protect the perimeter of the sub floor from being damaged by the weather. This also provides a decorative transition strip from the starter log course to the sub floor. This is available in many colors. You will need to pick out the color you prefer at the time the order is placed. The most common colors are dark brown and dark green. **This is an "Dry-In Package" item**
