Recreation Property Type: This historically significant area, first settled in the early 1860s, was home of the first Silver Ore Smelter in Montana Territory, which was constructed in 1866. Until that time Silver Ore was shipped for refining in Swansea, Wales. The town of Argenta grew rapidly with the rich findings, boasting a population of 1,500. Surrounding mining district claims reported 3,000 additional residents. In addition to Silver Ore, this mining district also produced Lead, some Gold, Copper and Zinc. Argenta was reported to have had 3 hotels, 6 saloons, 2 grocery stores, a dry goods store, 2 butcher shops, 2 blacksmith shops, a bakery, tailor shop and a dance hall. The rapid drop in silver prices due to the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893 brought all mining in the district to a close. Today, only a fortunate hand-full of residents make Argenta their home.
Area Recreation: Within minutes of a massive 500,000+ acre block of National Forest in the East and West Pioneer Mountains. This area includes the 76,000+ acre East Pioneer Mountains (Torrey Mountain), 25,700+ acre West Pioneers Mountains proposed Wilderness Areas and 129,000+ Acre West Pioneer Mountain Recreation Management Area.
